Sinotech Engineering Consultants and German firm Leonhardt, Andra und Partner have won an international design competition to build the Tamkang Bridge (淡江大橋) over the Tamsui River (淡水河) in New Taipei City with a design by Zaha Hadid Architects, the Directorate-General of Highways said yesterday….. Typhoon Soudelor’s Tilting Postboxes!

Until last weekend, these 2 postboxes were just ordinary postboxes on an ordinary street in ‪Taipei‬ City.  But then a signboard crashed down on them during Typhoon ‪‎Soudelor‬ and changed them forever. They were bent over, but not broken.  Tilting together in the same direction, 好可愛, so sweet, so lovely! Well here we are, alive to tell the tale.  That was definitely a storm to end all storms.  What a night it was, and then what a day.  24 hours of non-stop torrential rains, almost apocalyptic winds that shook the walls and windows until it felt like the buildings were going to collapse or take off, debris crashing and banging and flying into everything, and a 10 hour power cut. A nightmare of a week in Taiwan after the Colour Play Party disaster at the nearby water park last Saturday. Almost 500 injured, many critically – so far one has died, others may well follow.  Everybody knows somebody who was there or who has been affected in some way.  There are photos and messages all over social media asking for people’s prayers for the injured. The tragedy of the devastating earthquake in Nepal this week reminds us all of our own weakness and vulnerability. I was in Nepal for a CMS conference some years ago, and although all my CMS friends and contacts there are reporting in safe, all around them is not.  Here in Taiwan we recall the terrible earthquake of 1999 and its aftermath. Selby Abbey ~ wedding venue for Jay Chou 周杰倫!

On January 17, 2015, Selby Abbey suddenly became England’s most famous church.  Not to the English in England maybe.  But in Taiwan and perhaps Mainland China, definitely yes.  Suddenly more famous than Canterbury Cathedral, York Minster, St. Paul’s or Westminster Abbey.  And the place has been humming with Taiwanese and Chinese visitors ever since. All coming to see the church and town where famous Taiwanese singer Jay Chou 周杰倫 and his wife were married on that day.  The internet is buzzing with reports of the great event, the Daily Mail one is here.
