Miaoli’s Mysterious Misty Mountains….

A trip yesterday to the Nanzhuang district 南庄鄉 in the far NE corner of Miaoli County 苗栗縣, central Taiwan ~ kind of the middle of a very beautiful nowhere!  Our diocesan women’s group and seniors group organized a great trip for almost 60 lovely people from our churches in northern Taiwan ~ up into the misty mountains of Miaoli.  Here we all are, along with Bishop Lai, his wife Lily, her aunt, plus several other clergy and clergy spouses! St. John’s University Dept of Creative Design 創意設計系 Graduating Students Design Exhibition!

Gotta go, gotta see! Our 4th and final year students in the Dept of Creative Design have a special exhibition of their design projects ~ and they are AMAZING! So much talent, so much creativity, so much skill!  The students have been working on these projects for the last year ~ and this is the result. ‘A-dan’ is a member of our student fellowship, her project is titled ‘1990’ and full of quirky designs and products, fun ways for today’s young people to remember their 90’s childhoods…. St. John’s University, Taiwan ~ Annual Celebration!

Today is the day!  On this day 49 years ago, April 26, 1967, the Ministry of Education officially notified ‘St. John’s and St. Mary’s Institute of Technology’ SJSMIT, (the original name of St. John’s University, SJU) that they could start to recruit students for their brand new 5-year junior college courses. The school dates its foundation from that day, and many of the original first intake of students are still active in the SJU Alumni Association today. Bishop James C. L. 北海岸聯合詩班頌讚暨聯誼 Amazing Choir Festival @ Advent Church!

Scattered around here and further along the coast are several small churches with amazing choirs, and yesterday Advent Church was packed for our first choir festival ~ YES! The main inspiration for the choir festival came from our church members, Sheng-Feng and his lovely wife, who between them seem to be related to, or friends with, everybody in every choir in the whole area!   Choirs were invited from Sanzhi Presbyterian Church, Dan-Nung Bunun Church, Advent Church and the Teachers Choir from TamKang High School. St. John’s University Student Fellowship Sunday

It’s the end of April, and every year St. John’s University holds it annual university celebration day ~ held at this time around the anniversary of the accreditation of the school by the Dept of Education, and the death of the university’s founder, Bishop James C. L. Wong.  He died on April 27, 1970 and is buried under the altar in Advent Church.   Yesterday was the St. John’s University Student Fellowship Sunday, the service was mainly led by the student fellowship members, and offerings go towards that ministry. Alishan 阿里山 2016

Alishan has two 7- Eleven Stores, and claims they are the second highest in Taiwan ~ and Taiwan’s #1 highest post office too. Another must see! And Taiwan’s #1 highest elementary school.  Wow, that’s quite something!  2,195 metres above sea-level, that’s over 7,000 feet. Imagine that eh? But of course, none of these reasons are really why Alishan is so popular.  It’s very well up on the list of THE places to visit in Taiwan. The TS Taipei Shipwreck ~ 6 weeks later…

Six weeks ago, the container ship, TS Taipei grounded itself just off the northern tip of Taiwan, in Shimen District, and broke in two. This is the scene this afternoon…. And this was one of the reports at the time…. The T.S. Lines freighter, is grounded on rocks close to shore after losing power in bad weather shortly after departing from Keelung Harbor en route to Hong Kong. Breaches to the hull resulted in flooding of the engine compartment and damage to a fuel tank.
