A whole year of 60th anniversary celebrations at St. John’s Cathedral, Taipei was brought to a very fine and very fitting end yesterday afternoon ~ with a special thanksgiving concert, with choirs and music groups from Good Shepherd Church, St. James’ Church, Christ Church, and of course St. John’s Cathedral. Such a great visit to 大禮大同部落 Dali Datong Village, Taroko Gorge, Hualien ~ Home of 頭目達道 Truku Chief Dadao!

What an amazing place, amazing weekend, and what amazing people! Chief Dadao (頭目達道) of the Truku (Taroko) Tribe lives high up on a beautiful plateau, at over 1,100 m in altitude, way up above the steep slopes of the spectacular marble gorge, Taroko Gorge in Hualien on Taiwan’s east coast.  We went there to visit over this past weekend, and here’s us sitting with him on the bench outside his house, with THE view behind us! Taipei Grand Mosque 台北清真寺

Found myself walking past the Taipei Grand Mosque yesterday, on a beautiful sunny morning, and as it was open, popped in to take a look….. The Wikipedia website for Taipei Grand Mosque says it was designed by  Yang Cho-cheng, the famous architect who also designed the Grand Hotel, CKS Memorial, the National Concert Hall and Theater, and plenty of other famous landmarks in Taiwan.  It was inaugurated in 1960.  Quite a history, so do check it out. St. John’s University Coming of Age Ceremony (成年禮) 2016!

Another November, another Coming of Age Ceremony at St. John’s University for all our first year university students, over 800 of them!  Smartly dressed in their SJU blue ties and white shirts, and accompanied by their tutors, faculty, our new SJU President Peter Ay, SJU Alumni and about 100 parents, the students all arrived at 3:00 pm on Wednesday afternoon for our annual event.  As you will see, the preparations took much time and a lot of experimentation – especially to get those ties looking good! St. James’ Church, Taichung ~ another big welcome!

St. James’ Church, Taichung is one of the most hospitable churches ever, and when their rector, Rev. Lily Chang and their youth group leader, Chia-Lin heard of a group of youth coming to visit from St. Andrew’s Secondary School, Singapore, they rolled out the red carpet to welcome them!  The ladies of the church cooked up a huge feast of traditional Taiwan food to welcome them, and we had games and lots of fun together, with sharing about the Taiwan Episcopal Church and presentations.  Such a fun evening! Taichung Train Station ~ The Old and the New!

Yes, there’s a brand new Taichung Train Station, built right behind the old one, at high level rather than ground level ~ and opened last month by President Tsai Ing-Wen. The original one was built in the Japanese Colonial era, about 1905…. And we now walk through the old station to get to the new one at the back.  The new station complex is not yet finished, and there’s tons of construction going on all around, but so far so good! Ju Ming Art Museum 朱銘美術館, Jinshan, Taipei ~ a must-see on a sunny day!

And y’know, it’s really quite an amazing place!  A massive sculpture park set in the hills above Jinshan, just above Dharma Drum Mountain, the famous international Buddhist Centre, and just below all the huge graveyards that are higher up.  Beautiful views down over Jinshan to the sea.  Do check it out! Ju Ming Museum houses all the incredible art work of Ju Ming 朱銘, the world famous Taiwanese sculptor, born in Miaoli, Taiwan in 1938.
