A new school year at St. John’s University and 1,036 brand new first-year students have arrived and are settling in.  Classes started last week, and this week all the clubs and societies have launched forth with concerts, discos, welcome parties and dinners to attract the new students to join up…. there’s a lot going on! Our SJU Chaplaincy Student Fellowship has also been busy every day, and the main events were these last 2 evenings, Tuesday and Wednesday, when we welcomed the new students to a party in Advent Church, different days for different departments. St. John’s Cathedral, Taipei: Ordination Service and Appointment of Prof. Herbert Ma as Canon Chancellor

Yesterday was St. Matthew’s Day, Monday September 21, 2015, and an ordination service was held at St. John’s Cathedral, Taipei for Rev. Tsai Ching-Yi 蔡靜儀 and Rev. Wu Shing-Shiang 吳興祥.  Both were ordained priests.  Rev. Tsai serves at St. John’s Cathedral, and Rev. Wu serves here at Advent Church. They both studied at the seminary at Fu-Jen R. C. University in Taipei, and it was wonderful to welcome the seminary principal and many staff too ~ here’s all the clergy and friends, including those from Fu-Jen! 陳明邦感恩畫展 Mr. Chen Ming-Bang Thanksgiving Art Exhibition

The Grand Opening Ceremony of Mr. Chen Ming-Bang (陳明邦)’s Thanksgiving Art Exhibition! Mr. Chen Ming-Bang and his lovely wife are members of Advent Church, they have a home just up the coast from here, and whenever they’re here, they take part in all our services and activities.  Mr. Chen has had a very distinguished career in the civil service, including as Founding Director of the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office.  In his retirement, Mr. Chen has not sat idly by, but rather has put his artistic talents to great use and has produced over 60 paintings, which yesterday were put on … Continue reading 陳明邦感恩畫展 Mr. Chen Ming-Bang Thanksgiving Art Exhibition

Fugueijiao Lighthouse 富貴角燈塔 now open to the public!

Just 5 minutes on a bus up the road from here in Sanzhi 三芝 and then a 1 km walk, and there is the northern tip of Taiwan, and the famous Fugueijiao Lighthouse.  It’s round the promontory from the Fuji Fishing Harbour, and hidden behind the army camp, but the big news is that the lighthouse grounds are now open to the public.  All day every day except Mondays, and the whole world has turned up to check it all out! Teapot Mountain 茶壺山 and Banpingshan 半平山 (半屏山) Ridge

What a place!  In its heyday, Jinguashi 金瓜石 was a very major happening kind of place, a gold rush town up in the mountains above Keelung on Taiwan’s NE coast with one of the world’s largest gold and copper mines ~ over 600 km of tunnels in and under those hills. During the Japanese era (1895-1945), it became the largest copper mine in the Japanese empire. But by the 1970’s it was all gone, the gold rush all finished.  As with all mining towns, so here – a tragic history of hard labour and terrible working and living conditions.
