Easter Eve on Qixing Mountain 七星山 ~ Us ‘n the boys!
This morning up bright and early to take a group of lovely SJU students, all boys, plus Shu-Jing, one of our SJU chaplaincy staff – all of them on their first ever visit to Qixing Mountain, the highest in the Yang-Ming Shan Mountains….. Foggy and full of sulphur smoke from the fumaroles – all added to the atmosphere – great weather for walking in! Most appropriate for Easter Eve as we wait for the celebrations to start later tonight…. And back mid-afternoon in time to get ready for tonight’s Easter Vigil ~ one of the boys is to be baptized … Continue reading Easter Eve on Qixing Mountain 七星山 ~ Us ‘n the boys!

奇萊南峰 Chilai South Peak & 南華山 Nanhua Mountain
Big weekend just gone YA! Made the most of Tomb-Sweeping Festival and the long weekend, and off we went for a big expedition to Nantou County in central Taiwan for 3 days on the 能高越嶺古道 Nenggao Cross-Ridge Trail ~ which crosses Taiwan’s central mountain range from west to east… Like many beautiful places in the world, unfortunately the Nenggao Trail has a tragic history, related to the Wushe Incident… These days the trail is used only for peaceful purposes, and mostly by walkers…. that’s us! We started off on Thursday evening from Tamsui, arriving well past midnight in the village of … Continue reading 奇萊南峰 Chilai South Peak & 南華山 Nanhua Mountain
Taipei Student Protests ~ The Sunflower Movement….
Taiwan’s student-led protests and occupation of the Legislature are now into their 3rd week…. so I thought it was high time for me to go along and check out what’s going on! Yesterday (on my home from the diocesan office) I passed by in front of the Legislature Building in downtown Taipei City – the main door guarded by police, but crowds seated on stools listening to speakers, and of course people posing for photos, as always! Then around the back of the Legislature building, and in amongst the student protest area, located around a crossroads. People, tents, stalls, speakers, … Continue reading Taipei Student Protests ~ The Sunflower Movement….

St. James Church, Taichung 飛揚(肥羊)小組!
飛揚小組 is one of the 5 small cell-groups at St. James’ Church, Taichung ~ and all 5 have delightful names. Just think, this group could well be called the Wednesday Evening Cell group, after all that’s when they usually meet ~ but that would be so boring and unimaginative. Instead it is called 飛揚 Fei-Yang, which in a Christian context is often used to mean something like ‘Flying everywhere to share the Gospel’…. Cell groups have gone from strength to strength at St. James, a wonderful way of growing the church, and sharing and deepening faith. In this group are … Continue reading St. James Church, Taichung 飛揚(肥羊)小組!
