Sharing about Taiwan @ CMS Trustees

CMS (Church Mission Society) ~ my favourite organization, and all my favourite people, of course!

Met with the CMS Trustees (click on that link to find out who they all are!) and some of the CMS directors and staff on Thursday afternoon down near Oxford, and shared about life and ministry in Taiwan….

Do pray for them all, lots of challenges and things to do as a CMS Trustee ~ but as you can see above, lots of smiles and laughter too!

CMS Link Church Visit #1 ~ Sedbergh ~ YES!

My first official CMS Link Visit yesterday, starting at St. Andrew’s Church, Sedbergh, Cumbria ~ yippee!

The first of many link visits this Home Leave, a few before Christmas and many after….

Sedbergh is kind of my home base, so the visit is kind of spread out and kind of started unofficially in the summer when I happened in on a mission coffee morning in Sedbergh URC Church in aid of CMS… and then continued yesterday when I spoke at the main Sunday morning service, and to be continued further with a ppt and coffee event in a few weeks time….

Last time I was here, the church was in the Diocese of Bradford ~ now it’s moved to the Diocese of Carlisle, got a lovely new vicar too ~ and the church members still warmly remember the visit from Taiwan of Bishop David J. H. Lai and Lily, and Rev. Charles C. T. Chen and MaryJo in 2008 just before the Lambeth Conference, when Charles described Sedbergh as ‘paradise’ ~ yes indeed, paradise!

Ah yes, first the coffee morning photos….

And so to yesterday’s service….

Just wonderful people, the salt of the earth, truly!  Thank you everyone for your warm welcome, your prayers and your support, all much appreciated.  Paradise indeed!

CMS York ~ Osaka / Taiwan ~ and yep, more bubbles!

Big trip to York yesterday, with my mother along too ~ yippee, I just LOVE York!

Sedbergh to York is almost 100 miles each way over the A66 via Scotch Corner which means driving high up over the Pennines directly east into the rising sun, and back in the dark with gale-force winds ha ha!

What a fun day ~ first to check out York University campus and its beautiful lake….

Then off to a church on the east side of York for the autumn meeting of the CMS York Association – very delicious home-made soup and rolls and puddings and tea and coffee, followed by me giving a talk about Taiwan…

So many lovely people, including my good friends, Pam Cooper and Evelyn Wroe who’ve retired to York after many many years with CMS in Osaka, Japan.  The Dioceses of Taiwan and Osaka are companion dioceses, so we have lots of mutual friends, and as Pam has also been to Taiwan and met half the people in the powerpoint photos, well the connections are many and run deep!

Oh yes and more good friends who turned up on the day, Shelagh from CMS and Louise from well, long ago in Tanzania – altogether a total of almost 40 delightful people….

But as you know – a delicious lunch followed by a talk in a darkened hall to look at pictures of a far-away country on a warm Saturday afternoon, and well, just how to keep everyone awake?  Fortunately enough left from my visit to CMS HQ for everyone to have their own little jar of bubbles to blow every time the picture changed….

End result: bubbles everywhere and only one or two drifted off (people that is, not bubbles), but promptly woke up every few minutes to take another deep breath and BLOW!

And then off to the city centre down by York Minster for meet-up with family over cup of tea and scones – oh so very English!

By which time the sun was almost set and it was time to wind our windy way back over those Pennines to Sedbergh…

A great day, lovely people and yes, so much fun!

CMS Oxford Fun Day!

Not its official title of course, but my official day on Wednesday visiting CMS HQ in Oxford was definitely fun – well I had a great time anyway!

Lots of lovely people to meet, tea to drink, food to eat, stories to share….  such a warm welcome from such wonderful people who all work and pray so hard to help make CMS such a great mission society to work for ~ YES YES YES!

And of course, all helped along by a few balloons, smarties, shiny things, bubbles and smiles to share…. a wonderful day, thank you everyone!

Asia CMS is well and truly launched ~ YES YES YES!

Malaysia Truly Asia ~ YES!  Happens to be the location of our newly launched Asia CMS office and home base…. and what a great choice eh?  Blue skies, sun, sea, smiles and so much more ~ YES YES YES!

Off we all went to celebrate this long-awaited great event with a very magnificent and rather amazing Launch Dinner last Saturday in Kuala Lumpur….. (For the official and highly-recommended CMS version of what really happened at the Launch Dinner, click here…)

Then followed 4 fun days down on the coast in Port Dickson for a big CMS gathering at the beautiful new Methodist Centre….

Oh yes and mustn’t forget the few hours of sightseeing on arrival ~ to the KL Tower on Friday afternoon, and the 2 cathedrals on the Saturday morning…. So happy!

Laughed and laughed all week with /at (yep I admit it, it was mostly ‘at’!) lots of old friends, made lots of lovely new friends and drank a ton of coffee with condensed milk…

Bearing in mind that this was all happening while Malaysia and the rest of the world’s been facing the growing crisis of the missing Malaysian Airlines plane MH 370~ perhaps a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of the message we seek to proclaim….

And so to the big event itself ~ and in case you’re wondering, we were encouraged to wear the national dress of our home or adopted country ~ hence the wonderful outfits on display…. Just forget the boring old UK, with its total lack of national dress and imagination ha ha! Instead concentrate on the variety of beautiful outfits and even more beautiful people who were there….

Enjoy the small (well, only 8o+, out of a possible 1,000 or more!) selection of photos below, roughly in chronological order….

Smiles, smiles, smiles – lots of happy people!

Please pray, support and seek to get involved in Asia CMS ~ it’s the happening place to be!
