‘Silence’ 沈默 opens in Taiwan – must go, must see!

Harrowing, compelling, gruesome, powerful, emotional, brilliant ~ all these and more….. The movie ‘Silence’ 沈默 opened yesterday throughout Taiwan ~ definitely a Must-See ~ and all filmed in Taiwan, the scenery is superb – though recognizing familiar sites adds to the rawness and intensity of it all. Yes, Happy New Year 2017 from Taiwan’s beautiful east coast! After my visit to the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross in Shangwu, Dawu Township, Taitung County on Friday, I stayed on in Taitung and was joined by good friend, Ah-Guan from St. James’ Church, Taichung, and her daughter and dog for a weekend of seeing what’s what in Taitung.  Beautiful sunny hot weather, blue skies, blue sea, and lots of Taiwan Indigenous People singing and dancing! Yehliu Geopark ~ in the sun!

Yes, a rare sunny weekend, YIPPEE! Welcomed Lydia from the UK to visit Advent Church this morning and then to Yehliu Geopark this afternoon, not far from Jinshan ~ in beautiful sunshine!  Lydia even posed by one of the rocks ~ and there were plenty of other people taking plenty of photos everywhere we looked. Clear distant views of the mountains above Keelung – around Jiufen….. And we finished the day with a very late afternoon sunset at Fugueijiao Lighthouse on Taiwan’s northernmost point….. United Thank Offering UTO Collection 2016

Every Holy Week at Advent Church we collect up all our coins in blue collection boxes ready for our offerings on Maundy Thursday towards The Episcopal Church United Thank Offering (UTO)… This is my collection this morning! The Diocese of Taiwan has received several large grants from UTO in the past, most notably and most recently towards the purchase of a property for St. Stephen’s Church, Keelung….. well worth supporting! Week of Prayer for Christian Unity @ Taipei

Last night was a very beautiful, very ecumenical Taizé Service for this year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, organized by the National Council of Churches of Taiwan (NCCT), and held in 台灣基督長老教會汐止教會 Xizhi Presbyterian Church, on the outskirts of eastern Taipei – and served by the train line to Keelung…. This year’s theme is “Called to proclaim the mighty acts of the Lord” (1 Peter 2:9). Praying for Christian Unity around the world, in Taiwan, and in all our hearts and minds this coming year.
