This is Rev. Antony Liang and the lovely people at St. Luke’s Church, Hualien (台灣聖公會花蓮聖路加堂) after their Sunday service on April 7, as they gathered for worship only days after Taiwan’s devastating 7.2 earthquake on April 3 that hit Hualien especially hard. They have shown great resilience, and going forward will need God’s grace, strength and wisdom. Buildings are damaged, livelihoods destroyed and communities shaken. Hualien’s economy is heavily reliant on tourists visiting nearby Taroko Gorge, now completely blocked by rockfalls and landslides, and expected to be closed for at least 6 months – that’s all through the summer, the peak tourist season. In this photo are also Antony’s parents, visiting from Taichung, they had been hiking in Taroko Gorge only the day before the earthquake, on the same trail where several hikers still remain missing. All of us in the Taiwan Episcopal Church are grateful for God’s mercy and for your prayers. Please do continue to pray for all affected by this earthquake, and especially Antony, his family and all at St. Luke’s Church.
