Maundy Thursday 設立聖餐日@ Advent Church

Pouring with rain and with a strong wind as a very late cold front has suddenly arrived in the last day or two bringing with it some horrible weather and a return to winter temperatures ~ hey, we’re used to it by now, but this winter seems far from over, and it’s almost April! But as you’ll see from the photos below, some of our hardy students are still walking around in T-shirts saying they can’t understand what all the fuss is about! Our annual Maundy Thursday service was last night, and Thursday evening is also the evening when our … Continue reading Maundy Thursday 設立聖餐日@ Advent Church

棕枝主日‬ Palm Sunday 2016 @ Advent Church

Palm Sunday 2016 ~ and now the start of Holy Week! Yesterday at Advent Church, a procession with palms around the church stopping for a few seconds at each Station of the Cross, and then a drama of the events of Holy Week during the Gospel reading…. At the end of of the service, our rector Rev. Lennon Chang encouraged to do less of 3 things and more of 3 others during this coming Holy Week ~ less talking, less eating and less watching TV, and more confessing of our sins, more praying, more reading the Bible….. So wishing y’all … Continue reading 棕枝主日‬ Palm Sunday 2016 @ Advent Church

Spring Retreat @ Advent Church

Palm Sunday weekend and ideal for our Spring Retreat, helping us to focus on the coming Holy Week ~ today was the day, with about 30 of us from Advent Church, including quite a number of our fellowship students.  A day retreat, like a ‘Quiet Day’, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, based in one of the conference rooms of St. John’s University, and wonderfully led by Fr. Gino Picca, S. J. 王秉鈞神父 from Holy Family R. C. Church, Taipei.  Such a lovely friendly person!  He was ordained in Taipei in 1969, but first came to Taiwan from Italy in 1964 … Continue reading Spring Retreat @ Advent Church

Up into the clouds ~ on the Maokong Gondola 貓空纜車!

Fog, fog, fog and rain, rain, rain ~ but at least it wasn’t too cold – in fact, it was FUN! Up yesterday into the clouds on the Maokong Gondola – and out of them to arrive in the tea-growing hills above Taipei… THE way to travel! A ‘gondola’ will be forever associated in my mind with the boats and the singing boatmen of Venice (actually I haven’t been to Venice, but I have been to the Venetian Macao Hotel, where they also have real gondolas and singing boatmen!) ~ but a gondola lift is a type of cable car where the … Continue reading Up into the clouds ~ on the Maokong Gondola 貓空纜車!

Banquet Time with our good friends from Xian-Xiao 正德國中賢孝校區!

It’s the end of the semester and Chinese New Year’s coming ~ so yesterday we were honoured to attend a big banquet celebration, hosted by the Principal, Mr. Lin and Chairman of the Parents Association, Mr. Tsai of Zheng-De Junior High School 正德國中 in Tamsui.  A branch of their school, Xian-Xiao (or Hsien-Hsiao) 賢孝校區 is right next door to us here at St. John’s University, and most weeks during term-time, I’m there doing English conversation classes, and others from our church are there doing Life Values and Character Education classes. Then on Saturday mornings, some of their students come to Advent Church for … Continue reading Banquet Time with our good friends from Xian-Xiao 正德國中賢孝校區!

St. John’s Day @ Advent Church ~ and our Christmas Party!

Yes, a big day for Advent Church!  On the first Sunday after Christmas, we always celebrate St. John’s Day ~ and as this is St. John’s University, all our students past and present from the St. John’s University Student Fellowship – plus church members past and present – are always invited back. And today was the day!  Part of the theme of Advent is to ‘return’, and returning home to our home church is one of the things we’ve encouraged everyone to do this month.  And as it’s the last Sunday of 2015, it also seems a great way to … Continue reading St. John’s Day @ Advent Church ~ and our Christmas Party!

Christmas Eve @ Advent Church!

The highlight of Christmas Eve at St. John’s University every year is our Christmas Eve Service in Advent Church, well-attended by students, church members, local people and visitors ~ YES! Last night the service started at 7:30pm, and we also had 2 baptisms  ~ a gorgeous 2-month-old baby, son of our lovely church members; and one of our SJU Student Fellowship students in his 4th and final year, who was supported by all the Student Fellowship.  We started the service in darkness, then with candles ~ BEAUTIFUL!  And we finished the service with rice porridge and birthday cake! Thanking God … Continue reading Christmas Eve @ Advent Church!

Congratulations Mo-Huan, again!

In July last year, as reported in my blog post here, we gathered to congratulate one of our former students, and son of one of our church members, Mo-Huan, on his successful admission to Police College ~ after a long year of studying English with me, Maths with Rev. Lennon Chang, and generally getting up to scratch for the Police Entrance Exam, with encouragement from our church members, former police officer Ming-Chuan and his wife, Meng-Jen.  After a lot of hard work, Mo-Huan got the required grade, yippee! And we had a great dinner to celebrate, hosted by his mother. And … Continue reading Congratulations Mo-Huan, again!
