Well here we are, alive to tell the tale. That was definitely a storm to end all storms. What a night it was, and then what a day. 24 hours of non-stop torrential rains, almost apocalyptic winds that shook the walls and windows until it felt like the buildings were going to collapse or take off, debris crashing and banging and flying into everything, and a 10 hour power cut. With no electricity, we had no TV News, and although we had mobile and 3G signals, the power soon ran out on the phone and power bank. So all we could … Continue reading Typhoon Soudelor 蘇迪勒颱風
Typhoon Soudelor is fast approaching, the strongest typhoon of the year so far. Moving fast in our direction. Having wreaked havoc in Saipan a few days ago, it’s now heading for a direct hit on Taiwan early tomorrow morning before heading to Mainland China…. Actually today has been quite quiet so far up here in the far north of Taiwan, breezy with showers, but big winds and torrential rains expected to start this evening…. The day before a typhoon is often beautiful, with clear blue skies and a glorious sunset. And yesterday was just like that! This was the … Continue reading Typhoon Soudelor on it’s way…
Yep, out of all the places in this northern Taiwan town of Sanzhi 三芝 for swallows to choose to gather for their nightly rendezvous, they choose the main intersection right in the centre of town, where life goes on more or less non-stop 24/7 – this was the scene there last night! In the evenings there’s a shop selling fried chicken right here under these lights, and next door is a breakfast shop, so there’s not many hours when people aren’t lining up right here to buy something! Swallows are regarded as auspicious birds in Taiwan and people go to great … Continue reading Sanzhi Swallows Nightly Rendezvous!

There’s only one way to cook it for it not to taste bitter in my humble opinion, and that’s the Hakka style stir-fry. Otherwise it is just disgusting! Bitter it is, and always will be. In juice and in soup, pickled and in a thousand other ways. It is just awful. Definitely an acquired taste! Bitter melon or bitter gourd is very popular here in Taiwan, and yesterday I found some growing just up the road. So here it is – mostly covered in bags to stop the birds and squirrels from eating it. Do they really like it, I … Continue reading Bitterly Bitter and Bitterly Bad Bitter Gourd 苦瓜!
A few days ago the weather maps were showing a row of 3 typhoons all in a line, all in the western Pacific, and all heading in our direction. The first one, Lin-fa skirted the southern tip of Taiwan a few days ago, and now the second, Chan-Hom is skirting the northern tip of Taiwan. This map is what it all looks like ~ courtesy of the Taiwan Government Central Weather Bureau. The third one is actually supposed to head north towards Japan instead of west towards us, but anything is possible in the world of typhoons! Chan-Hom is big, but … Continue reading Typhoon Day!

New house, new town! Yep, I’m now living in the town of Sanzhi 三芝, variously spelt Sanzhi, Sanshi, Sanjhih or Sanchih, and just to confuse you further, variously pronounced San-ze or San-jer. We’re on the NW coast of Taiwan, 5 miles (8 km) north of St. John’s University, and about 3 miles SW of the northern tip of Taiwan, a GREAT location! Sanzhi Town and District is the sort of place where everyone passes through in order to get to somewhere else. They’re on their way north to the beautiful white sand beach just up the road at Baishawan, going … Continue reading Introducing Sanzhi 三芝!
