CMS Link Visit to St. John’s Church, Neville’s Cross, Durham

Never judge a book by its cover, nor, dare I say it, a church by it’s outside ha ha!  Just cos a church don’t have no steeple or tower, even in a country full of ’em and in a city with one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the whole world, well it don’t mean nothing! And so it was that I’ve just spent a wonderful weekend with the very delightful people of St. John’s Church, Neville’s Cross, Durham City.  What a welcome! An amazing congregation ~ all so lovely, so welcoming, so interested in everything.  But preaching there is not … Continue reading CMS Link Visit to St. John’s Church, Neville’s Cross, Durham

CMS Link Visit to Barnet Parish Church

Oozing with history and character ~ Barnet Parish Church is just such a stunning building, and right in pole position on Barnet High Street. The church has been supporting CMS for many years, and my own connection goes back to the days of the former rector, Rev. Hall Speers and his family, who a long long time ago were USPG missionaries in Madagascar. Some years ago, I joined with them and some of the congregation on New Year’s Eve on top of the Barnet Church tower to watch the fireworks ~ amazing! Today I met the new rector, Chris for … Continue reading CMS Link Visit to Barnet Parish Church

Yep, I really love London!

Ah, London ~ yes, I love it! Met up with one of my lovely former pupils today, Eshita ~ who I taught at Isamilo School, Mwanza, Tanzania, many years ago when she was just 5…. and now she’s doing all sorts of wonderful things along the line of job coaching and training support for students with learning disabilities in London.  She herself is partially sighted and a great inspiration for her students – and for me too! We spent the day in central London on a Walk 4 Life Walk covering the ‘Real West End’, Soho, Chinatown and Covent Garden, all free … Continue reading Yep, I really love London!

CMS Link Visit to All Saints with St. Peter, Luton

Just had such a really great weekend! All Saints Church in Bury Park, Luton has been supporting me for years and years and years ~ and the connection goes back to their former vicar, Rev. Sam Prasadam, who had been CMS Area Secretary in the NE of England before moving to Luton in the late 1980’s. We also had a connection at the same time through Sam between my home church in Heighington, Co. Durham and All Saints, Luton, a north-south, rural-urban link ~ involving exchange visits and prayer ~ all sorts of lasting friendships were made.  So I’ve known … Continue reading CMS Link Visit to All Saints with St. Peter, Luton

Ilam, Staffordshire Peak District

Ilam, a tiny little village in the Peak District, but oh so picturesque…. It’s also the home of Dovedale House, the Youth Retreat Centre of the Diocese of Lichfield. The diocese has a really good companion diocese relationship with the Diocese of West Malaysia, and hosts volunteers from Malaysia under the St. Chad’s Volunteers Scheme. So off I went southeast across the country via Ilam to call in at Dovedale House and say hello to their St. Chad’s Volunteer, Christopher, whose parents led a mission to St. John’s University and Advent Church, Taiwan a few years ago, and we all became … Continue reading Ilam, Staffordshire Peak District

I LOVE LONDON!

A whole day in London on a gloriously sunny but freezing cold winter day – with my uncle, starting with, well ~ the Lyle’s Golden Syrup Machine at Victoria Station!  Free porridge was on offer, and when you stand in front of the golden syrup machine and SMILE (yes smile, honest!) the golden syrup comes down on the porridge, and yep it works! And then onto Westminster R. C. Cathedral, Byzantine style, quite dark and sombre inside, but also full of beautiful mosaics…. And then along the river downstream and what a trip it was!  Sun and blue sky all … Continue reading I LOVE LONDON!
