We celebrated the 60th anniversary of St. John’s Cathedral last night ~ and what a great celebration it was! Congratulations to all, and thanks be to Almighty God! And the pièce de résistance, the jewel in the crown of all the celebrations last night must have been the impromptu drum performance by our very esteemed and distinguished Canon Chancellor, Professor Herbert H. A very special day yesterday at the beautiful St. Peter’s Church for the wedding of a very lovely couple, Michael and Hany Lee! The newly-restored church looked stunning, and of course it was a real church family event ~ St. Peter’s excels at being a really close church family! Michael’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee are devoted members of St. Peter’s, his father is on the church committee, and his mother is chair of St. Peter’s ECW (Episcopal Church Women). We have a new group at Advent Church learning Taiko Drums 豐收擂鼓班 and after only 2 months of lessons, this is their first public performance ~ for today’s Mother’s Day Service at Advent Church! Has to be said that those at this end wished I’d been filming the others at the other end ha ha ~ but it was fun at this end! Yes, welcoming President Ma for the official unveiling of the St. John’s University Zhuo-Yun Building 倬雲樓, and this was THE moment! So today was the big day ~ and the sun was shining ~ YES! Just look at that blue sky at 8:00 am this morning ~ those in suits were sweltering! St. John’s University Annual Fun Run ~ and we were there ~ YES! Yesterday afternoon, 3:00 pm, and there we all were, hundreds of students (including all the first years), and maybe 30-40 faculty and staff all being launched forth by SJU President Chen, accompanied by at least 2 drones flying up above ~ while down below we had students dressed as animals, cartoon characters and in all sorts of other fun costumes, and off we set. And this year, even more lovely people came than usual, and lots of smiling VIPs came too ~ here they all are last Saturday at the St. James’ Charity Bazaar! Every year on the Saturday before Mother’s Day weekend, St. James’ Preschool and Language Institute hold a great fiesta, bazaar, fair, extravaganza all rolled into one. Miaoli’s Mysterious Misty Mountains….
A trip yesterday to the Nanzhuang district 南庄鄉 in the far NE corner of Miaoli County 苗栗縣, central Taiwan ~ kind of the middle of a very beautiful nowhere! Our diocesan women’s group and seniors group organized a great trip for almost 60 lovely people from our churches in northern Taiwan ~ up into the misty mountains of Miaoli. Here we all are, along with Bishop Lai, his wife Lily, her aunt, plus several other clergy and clergy spouses! Gotta go, gotta see! Our 4th and final year students in the Dept of Creative Design have a special exhibition of their design projects ~ and they are AMAZING! So much talent, so much creativity, so much skill! Today is the day! On this day 49 years ago, April 26, 1967, the Ministry of Education officially notified ‘St. John’s and St. Mary’s Institute of Technology’ SJSMIT, (the original name of St. John’s University, SJU) that they could start to recruit students for their brand new 5-year junior college courses. The school dates its foundation from that day, and many of the original first intake of students are still active in the SJU Alumni Association today. Bishop James C. L.
