Comings and Goings….

Been away in the UK for 7 months and so much has happened in my absence.  Out in the big bad world, as usual more has changed in 7 months in Taiwan than in the UK over the whole previous 3½ years that I’d been away ha ha!  In Taiwan, new buildings, new businesses, new roads, new Metro Stations, new everything keeps appearing – but in the case of people, some have left and can never be replaced! Quite a few staff here at St. John’s University retired while I was away, including Mrs. Chao from our chaplaincy office – … Continue reading Comings and Goings….

Advent Church celebrates Mother’s Day!

Yes we had a wonderful Mother’s Day yesterday, with a special song from our Advent Church choir ~ and then more special songs and dances from one of our groups who are mostly not church members but meet for singing and dancing on a Sunday afternoon, a kind of outreach ministry of Advent Church.  They perform for us several times a year, always beautifully attired, this time Hawaiian style! Carnations are THE flower for Mother’s Day, so the Sunday School children were kept very busy distributing them all…. And finally all the mothers in the church gathered for a big … Continue reading Advent Church celebrates Mother’s Day!

Taipei Streets and Alleys…

This week I’m in Taipei, staying at the Diocese of Taiwan office building, right in the central area of the city.  Within walking distance of most of the national government buildings.  Unlike most capital cities in the world, the centre of Taipei is also home to lots of ordinary Taiwan people.  There’s primary schools, street markets, local shops, health and community centres all there for local people.  I like it! During the Japanese colonial era, 1895-1945, this area of Taipei was home to many Japanese living in one-storey Japanese-style homes, mostly wood, with heavy tiled roofs. Only a few such … Continue reading Taipei Streets and Alleys…
