馬祖 Matsu Islands: Boats, Beauty and, yes, Blue Tears!

Yes, we even saw the famous Blue Tears (藍眼淚) of Matsu, honest!  And they were AMAZING! And the only reason we saw them was because of that terrible Typhoon Dujuan that hit us on the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival weekend at the end of September.  Sometimes, y’know, even typhoons have a silver lining! Every year, the Diocese of Taiwan organizes a trip for a few days to visit somewhere interesting ~ mostly for the older people, but anyone is welcome, and several invite their friends and family, who may or may not be church members, so we have a lovely variety! And … Continue reading 馬祖 Matsu Islands: Boats, Beauty and, yes, Blue Tears!

2015年台灣普世豐盛生命協會感恩餐會 GLEC Thanksgiving Dinner ~ and we were there!

Not only were we there, but so was Dr. Doris Brougham 彭蒙惠, possibly Taiwan’s best-known missionary and English teacher – famous for her Studio Classroom English classes through ORTV, and for her trumpet playing and very lively personality.  She’s now 89, and has been in Taiwan since 1951, and is still dancing, singing, playing her trumpet and sharing her faith.   Amazing!  Her music group, Heavenly Melody 天韻 led the worship and she joined in with her trumpet, ah it was wonderful! And so it was that we had a very entertaining, challenging and of course, a very moving evening! During this past … Continue reading 2015年台灣普世豐盛生命協會感恩餐會 GLEC Thanksgiving Dinner ~ and we were there!

Congratulations Mo-Huan, again!

In July last year, as reported in my blog post here, we gathered to congratulate one of our former students, and son of one of our church members, Mo-Huan, on his successful admission to Police College ~ after a long year of studying English with me, Maths with Rev. Lennon Chang, and generally getting up to scratch for the Police Entrance Exam, with encouragement from our church members, former police officer Ming-Chuan and his wife, Meng-Jen.  After a lot of hard work, Mo-Huan got the required grade, yippee! And we had a great dinner to celebrate, hosted by his mother. And … Continue reading Congratulations Mo-Huan, again!

St. John’s University Opening Service

A new school year at St. John’s University and we always start each new year (and each semester) with a service in Advent Church, attended by the university president and some of the faculty and staff, along with student representatives from each class.  Members of the student fellowship sing in a choir formed for the occasion, and also lead the prayers. The service ends with the lighting of candles and the singing of the school song, and procession out of the church.  The service was held yesterday afternoon…. A great chance for everyone to come together to commit the new … Continue reading St. John’s University Opening Service

The Grand Opening Ceremony of Mr. Chen Ming-Bang (陳明邦)’s Thanksgiving Art Exhibition! Mr. Chen Ming-Bang and his lovely wife are members of Advent Church, they have a home just up the coast from here, and whenever they’re here, they take part in all our services and activities.  Mr. Chen has had a very distinguished career in the civil service, including as Founding Director of the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office.  In his retirement, Mr. Chen has not sat idly by, but rather has put his artistic talents to great use and has produced over 60 paintings, which yesterday were put on … Continue reading 陳明邦感恩畫展 Mr. Chen Ming-Bang Thanksgiving Art Exhibition

Hakka Week ~ Hakka Style!

Hakka week ~ so got ma Hakka shoes out! Wikipedia says that about 15% of Taiwan‘s 23 million people are of Hakka origin, with a worldwide population of about 80 million…. And that includes my good friends, Rev. and Mrs. Hsu, who live up the road in Shuang-Lien Elderly Care Home.  September 1 was Rev. Hsu’s 91st birthday.  The family had celebrated with them earlier in the summer, but they are such a lovely couple that we just had to celebrate this big day on the very day itself.  Rev. Hsu totally loves Japanese sashimi, a glass of Taiwan beer and … Continue reading Hakka Week ~ Hakka Style!

Welcoming Bishop and Mrs. Lily Lai and so many lovely people!

Sunday afternoon – after our confirmation service at Advent Church at 10:00am and then our usual lunch at church – was a great opportunity to invite Bishop and Mrs. Lily Lai to come to visit my new house in Sanzhi 三芝, and what a great opportunity also to invite the older people in our congregation who normally meet on Sunday afternoon for 2 hours of Bible Study and fellowship ~ YES! Plus anyone else who wanted to come along – with an offer of huge amounts of ice-cream and Bishop Lai’s Chinese Tea!  So neighbours and friends and a student … Continue reading Welcoming Bishop and Mrs. Lily Lai and so many lovely people!

Confirmation Service @ Advent Church

Yes, it was a big confirmation weekend at Advent Church, although we had been a bit worried that we might get typhooned-out!  Fortunately, in the event, Typhoon Goni passed by with heavy rains and some wind, but not too bad. Sadly the typhoon had already caused much death and destruction in the Philippines, but this time we were spared the worst. Bishop Lai and his wife Lily came for the morning worship, and we had 4 confirmations, of which 3 were our students, past and present, from St. John’s University Student Fellowship.  One was arranged kind of at the last minute as the … Continue reading Confirmation Service @ Advent Church
