Kirkstone Pass, Cumbria ~ and Wordsworth was right!

Ah yes, the Kirkstone Pass, the highest pass in the Lake District at 454m – and there at the top is the welcome sight of the Kirkstone Pass Inn ~ where yesterday the log fire was so welcome and the pumpkin soup was just wonderful! Up from Troutbeck and down to Ullswater ~ stunning! It was Wordsworth who said about the Kirkstone Pass: “Who comes not hither ne’er shall know, how beautiful the world below…” So so true! Morecambe Bay ~ just amazing!

Huge, vast, ginormous in fact – there’s no other description, absolutely endless miles and miles of sands and water, stretching way beyond the horizon.  Unfortunately the sands are famous for being as dangerous as they are beautiful, but viewed from the safety of the road, well, yesterday they were spectacular! So near, and yet so far!  From the Howgill Fells above Sedbergh, Morecambe Bay glitters in the distance every time the sun comes out and the clouds lift, but it’s always one of the those places we pass by, and never go to. Enough is enough, and yesterday was the … Continue reading Morecambe Bay ~ just amazing!

The Howgill Fells ~ in all their glory!

Yesterday was the best weather of the whole year ~ one solitary day of warm sunshine and little wind sandwiched between days of mild but wet and windy weather on either side – for one day, it was just wonderful! Frosty early in the morning, the first frost of the autumn – but then the sun came out, and yippee, time to go out! So what better than a few hours on the top of the Howgill Fells, up above Sedbergh… beautiful! It was Wainwright who described them as looking like a whole herd of sleeping elephants, and yep, that … Continue reading The Howgill Fells ~ in all their glory!

Ah London ~ so much to see, so little time!

My first day back in the UK with a long list of things to do, including the major excitement of laminating the group photo of last month’s House of Bishops in Taiwan – so with that excuse and clutching my large rolled-up photo, off I go to the big city! Underground train to London Bridge and a walk along Tooley Street to Tower Bridge, and London City Mission – when I lived there many years ago, it was well, like not exactly the highest class area of London – now though the area is all done up, and the old derelict wharves … Continue reading Ah London ~ so much to see, so little time!

A Summer in Sedbergh….

A Summer in Sedbergh – and quite some summer!  Tourists galore soaking up the sunshine, browsing in the bookshops and hiking up the Howgills, while the locals are enjoying the summer weather walking their dogs, and smiling at increased trade in the town… Meanwhile I’m busy sorting, clearing, packing and driving up almost daily to the Sedbergh Charity Shop to offload box after box of all sorts of wonderful stuff, now all on display inside the shop and outside on the street.  If you’re up this way, do come and check it all out – there’s some great bargains on … Continue reading A Summer in Sedbergh….

Penghu 澎湖 sun, sea, sand, sky ~ and such a lovely baby!

A great weekend in Penghu with my most-adaptable (go everywhere, do everything!) visitors Mike and Harriet – visiting good friends Feng-Mei and her family at Xiyu Presbyterian Church ~ my second visit (for the first one last August, check out my blog post here), and this time, no typhoon – instead we had wonderful blue skies and seas the whole time…. yippee! Saw all the sights, swam in the sea, ate all the local delicacies, happened upon a Taiwanese Opera Festival, and joined in the Sunday worship and Sunday School at Xiyu Church…. The highlight was definitely the meals we … Continue reading Penghu 澎湖 sun, sea, sand, sky ~ and such a lovely baby!

All black and white…..

It’s the end of the school year and exams loom large for many… For our students at St. John’s University classes, exams and graduation are all over, and students all vacated the campus this past weekend.  Many are sad to leave.  It’s soooooo quiet without them all! For our neighbouring junior-high school, the 9th grade students have already graduated and the younger ones are deep in exams, as they are all over the country… Tragically this past weekend, one of those just-graduated 9th grade students from our neighbouring school was killed in a road accident.  Every year the long summer holiday … Continue reading All black and white…..
