Mainsgill Farm, N. Yorkshire

Crossing the A66 yesterday on my way from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire to West Kilbride, on Scotland’s west coast ~ and called in at Mainsgill Farm.  Been past this place many times in the last few months and noticed camels and llamas in the front field ~ kinda seems strange for the Pennines!  But hey, it’s a great place with lots of farm animals, many with babies on show or eating away, and ignoring the visitors! Great place for a coffee break, and to say hi to the animals! Continue reading Mainsgill Farm, N. Yorkshire

CMS Link Visit to Dewsbury, W. Yorkshire

From mills to minster ~ Dewsbury used to be famous for its mills, now it’s the minster that has pride of place in the town.  Actually there’s been a place of worship there ever since about AD 627 when Paulinus came to visit and soon the ancient minster parish covered 400 miles all across northern England…. These days Dewsbury has a large Asian community, mostly Muslim, and Dewsbury Minster is the designated Christian Interfaith Centre for the area, so lots of groups come to learn about the Christian faith.  In the mid 1990’s the minster was completely reorganized – the east … Continue reading CMS Link Visit to Dewsbury, W. Land’s End, Cornwall

You just MUST go to Land’s End, honest, just once in yer life!  Even if you are not starting or ending a Land’s End to John o’ Groats marathon.  GO!  Not to see Shaun the sheep, dinosaurs, llamas and all the other theme park attractions (yep, they’re all there, honest!) but just to get to the furthest end of the country and look out over the magnificent cliffs and see the sea, the rocks, the lighthouse, and the amazing seabirds.  It is fantastic! And even if you don’t come from Doncaster – or even know where it is.  As you … Continue reading Land’s End, Cornwall

St. Michael’s Mount, Cornwall

What a place!  An island at high tide, connected to the mainland at low tide by a causeway ~ and then on top of the island, what used to be a Benedictine Monastery, then converted to a castle and garrison, and now also a kind of family home and museum…. St. Michael’s Mount is run by the National Trust, along with the St. Aubyn family ~ really well-organised and well-run, and I was so pleased to be the first person in there today! Had a wonderful morning climbing up all the steps, enjoying the views and the sun ~ it’s … Continue reading St. Michael’s Mount, Cornwall

Truro Cathedral

There’s only 3 cathedrals in the UK with 3 spires, and Truro Cathedral is one of them, and guess what? Sadly none of those spires are open to the public. Now I like something to go up or go in or go down, so if a cathedral has a crypt or a tower or spire, or even a high gallery, well that’s for me!  But Truro keeps its spires secret unto itself, so we could only look up at them ~ and imagine. Truro is way down in Cornwall, the far SW of England, and the cathedral is Victorian. Kind of … Continue reading Truro Cathedral

On the road with Elvis….

You never quite know what you’re gonna find in this country ~ and so it was that on my way down to S.W. England along the A303 today, found myself passing Stonehenge for the first time in my life ~ and then a hour or so further along, there was Elvis and his friends hanging out at an American diner on the same road…. There’s Elvis and his friends cruising along on the wall of a diner all covered with signs of the iconic Route 66 in the USA.  Driving along the A303 and such an association with Route 66 does … Continue reading On the road with Elvis….
