Advent Sunday @ 台灣聖公會嘉義聖彼得堂 St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Chiayi

Advent Sunday is always special ~ at last the excitement of Christmas coming can officially start ~ YES! And Advent at St. Peter’s Church, Chiayi this year is extra-special because they’ve just finished a major overhaul of the church building.  A big renovation project and big challenge for the vicar, Rev. Simon Tsou Tsai-Shin 鄒才新牧師 and all the church members ~ but thankfully it’s all finished (apart from paying the bills!) and in 2 weeks time, Bishop Lai is leading a dedication for the newly-finished building. St. Peter’s Church building was originally not a church at all, but part of … Continue reading Advent Sunday @ 台灣聖公會嘉義聖彼得堂 St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Chiayi

台灣聖公會岡山諸聖堂 All Saints Episcopal Church, Gangshan (Kangshan) 設堂60週年感恩聖禮 60th Anniversary Celebrations!

Yes, the first Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Taiwan to celebrate their 60th anniversary, and yesterday was the day! All Saints Church, Gangshan (Kangshan) in Kaohsiung was officially established in 1955, only a year after the official establishment of the Taiwan Episcopal Church ~ and we had a whole year of celebrations last year for that great milestone!  Gangshan has a large air force base, and some of the air force families coming from Mainland China after 1949 were Episcopalians who wanted to worship in Mandarin Chinese, and so started family worship and fellowship groups ~ which gradually led … Continue reading 台灣聖公會岡山諸聖堂 All Saints Episcopal Church, Gangshan (Kangshan) 設堂60週年感恩聖禮 60th Anniversary Celebrations!

馬祖 Matsu Islands: Boats, Beauty and, yes, Blue Tears!

Yes, we even saw the famous Blue Tears (藍眼淚) of Matsu, honest!  And they were AMAZING! And the only reason we saw them was because of that terrible Typhoon Dujuan that hit us on the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival weekend at the end of September.  Sometimes, y’know, even typhoons have a silver lining! Every year, the Diocese of Taiwan organizes a trip for a few days to visit somewhere interesting ~ mostly for the older people, but anyone is welcome, and several invite their friends and family, who may or may not be church members, so we have a lovely variety! And … Continue reading 馬祖 Matsu Islands: Boats, Beauty and, yes, Blue Tears!

Yesterday was St. Matthew’s Day, Monday September 21, 2015, and an ordination service was held at St. John’s Cathedral, Taipei for Rev. Tsai Ching-Yi 蔡靜儀 and Rev. Wu Shing-Shiang 吳興祥.  Both were ordained priests.  Rev. Tsai serves at St. John’s Cathedral, and Rev. Wu serves here at Advent Church. They both studied at the seminary at Fu-Jen R. C. Good Shepherd Church ~ New Lift Tower!

Ah, my summer at Good Shepherd Church, Shilin, Taipei leading an English Bible Summer Camp for a class of primary-aged children is finally over…. oh so many blessings! And one of the excitements on the sidelines was the ongoing installation of Good Shepherd’s long-awaited and first ever lift / elevator on the outside of the main administrative building. It’s going to be just so much easier for the older people going to their classes on the second floor, and all the floors above – the church office, the rectory and everywhere in-between. So a summer of dust, drilling, smoke, scaffolding, … Continue reading Good Shepherd Church ~ New Lift Tower!

Welcoming Bishop and Mrs. Lily Lai and so many lovely people!

Sunday afternoon – after our confirmation service at Advent Church at 10:00am and then our usual lunch at church – was a great opportunity to invite Bishop and Mrs. Lily Lai to come to visit my new house in Sanzhi 三芝, and what a great opportunity also to invite the older people in our congregation who normally meet on Sunday afternoon for 2 hours of Bible Study and fellowship ~ YES! Plus anyone else who wanted to come along – with an offer of huge amounts of ice-cream and Bishop Lai’s Chinese Tea!  So neighbours and friends and a student … Continue reading Welcoming Bishop and Mrs. Lily Lai and so many lovely people!

Confirmation Service @ Advent Church

Yes, it was a big confirmation weekend at Advent Church, although we had been a bit worried that we might get typhooned-out!  Fortunately, in the event, Typhoon Goni passed by with heavy rains and some wind, but not too bad. Sadly the typhoon had already caused much death and destruction in the Philippines, but this time we were spared the worst. Bishop Lai and his wife Lily came for the morning worship, and we had 4 confirmations, of which 3 were our students, past and present, from St. John’s University Student Fellowship.  One was arranged kind of at the last minute as the … Continue reading Confirmation Service @ Advent Church

Nietzsche ~ and his words of wisdom?

Nearing the end of 4 weeks English Bible Summer Camp at Good Shepherd Church, Taipei.  We’ve been through the first 5 chapters of Matthew’s Gospel and, well, had a great time, in-between typhoons that is…. So I couldn’t help but smile when one of my 9-year-olds turned up earlier in the week in this T-shirt…. As is well known, Nietzsche was not exactly famous for his love of the Bible, not exactly the sort of person who would send his children to a Bible Summer Camp, and as for the English part of it all…. well, who knows? And guess what? The … Continue reading Nietzsche ~ and his words of wisdom?

Good Shepherd Summer Camp 2015

Every summer, Good Shepherd Church Kindergarten in Shilin, Taipei City, holds an English Bible Summer Camp as part of their main teaching program for primary-aged children  ~ 4 mornings a week for 4 weeks ~ and we’ve just started – YEAH!  So here I am, staying at Good Shepherd Church – which is currently like a construction site as they are installing a lift.  T’will be great when’t finished, but for now we’re living in clouds of dust! There’s 20 children, 2 other teachers and me.  The classes focus on the first 5 chapters of Matthew’s Gospel, every day a … Continue reading Good Shepherd Summer Camp 2015
