Another day, another cathedral ~ and another cathedral tower too – yippee! And so it was that I found myself today at the top of Salisbury Cathedral looking down on the world, and the world as it is around the cathedral is really quite beautiful ~ the city of Salisbury, the cathedral close, the river and the hills in the distance…. Amazingly, the cathedral took the grand total of only 38 years to build, and that in the middle of the 13th century ~ certainly no hanging about. In the next century they added the spire, pretty magnificent, the tallest … Continue reading Salisbury Cathedral
So excited to see my good friends Mary and Margaret come from Sedbergh to attend the CMS Discovery Day at St. Thomas’ Church, Kendal yesterday ~ and wow, it was some day! Jam-packed full of amazing activities for children and adults ~ the morning all about Taiwan, with me talking to the adults, and the children busy too ~ the afternoon all about the UK, with Jenny Green sharing about her life and ministry in Bradford since returning from Uganda. Tons of really great Taiwan activities organized by the CMS group for the children – and some for the adults, … Continue reading CMS Discovery Day @ Kendal, Cumbria
An octagonal house ~ just how cool is that?! The Anglesey Toll Houses web page says: ‘Thomas Telford designed and supervised the building of the Menai Suspension Bridge, and the road from Holyhead on Anglesey to London. The bridge took from 1818 – 1826 to build. As a means of recuperating some of the money there were five toll gates, each with a toll house, that were erected at approximately five mile intervals between the Menai Suspension Bridge and Holyhead.’ So happens that my good friends in Anglesey have one of ’em, in Gwalchmai, and beautiful it is indeed….. Just … Continue reading Anglesey, N. Wales
En route to Anglesey today and just had to stop at Conwy Castle for a visit, just FANTASTIC! A real castle, not just an old ruin, with views so magnificent of the Conwy Estuary, out to sea and all over the hills. Oh yes and a walk around the Conwy Town Walls and saw the smallest house in Britain ~ such a beautiful town. In fact just like a mini Chester! Sorry to have to admit it, but it’s my first visit to Wales for 25 years, truly disgraceful. Such a beautiful country, but oh what a language ~ signposts … Continue reading Conwy Castle, N. Wales
En route to Chester yesterday, stopped to go up Helsby Hill for glorious views over the Mersey, and even in the distance to Liverpool Cathedral……. Today ~ a beautiful sunny day in the city of Chester ~ walking around the old city walls, passing Britain’s oldest racecourse, the old bridge over the River Dee, the canal, Roman ruins, old city centre and the cathedral. Very highly recommended ~ going up Chester Cathedral tower. It is just brilliant! Only £8 and that gets you a tour up the tower with a real live guide who also took us along inside the cathedral … Continue reading Chester ~ must see!
Fantastic church, wonderful people, and a whole lot of lovely new Chinese friends! My links with Huddersfield go back years and years, and Holy Trinity Church, just north of the centre of the town, has always been really supportive of CMS ~ and of me too! When my good friends Pam and Nigel moved to Holy Trinity from Heighington, Co. Durham in the late 1980’s, and there I was, preparing to join CMS and go to Tanzania, Holy Trinity offered their support – and hey presto, they’re still supporting me all these years later. Actually Pam and Nigel have been away … Continue reading CMS Link Visit to Holy Trinity Church, Huddersfield
Almost 7 hours on the M1 yesterday to get to Sheffield, long delays of hours for 2 separate accidents in the middle of 2 separate sets of roadworks, plus of course the roadworks themselves. Groan, groan! But finally got here, following the postcode to find that the place I’m staying in turns out to be in the Hillsborough area of Sheffield. Sadly the name ‘Hillsborough’ is synonymous with the Hillsborough Disaster of 1989, when 96 Liverpool football fans were crushed to death during a match at the Hillsborough Stadium during a FA Cup Semi-final match. There’s a memorial to those who … Continue reading Hillsborough, Sheffield
In the early morning sun this morning… Just only waiting for the daffodils to come out! Continue reading Chingford Old Church, London E4
