Tree of Life Memorial Garden @ St. Helen’s Church, Sandal Magna, Wakefield

You’ve just gotta go and see this, it’s truly amazing, honest! A brand-new Tree of Life Memorial Garden for the interment of ashes, unique in the whole world, and right there in the churchyard of St. Helen’s Church, Sandal Magna, Wakefield! The parish of Sandal Magna is one of my most wonderful CMS Link Churches, so on my visit there this past weekend, I just had to go and see the Memorial Garden…. It really deserves to be more widely known, and the vicar Rupert Martin has kindly given me permission to use some of his original photos and info … Continue reading Tree of Life Memorial Garden @ St. Helen’s Church, Sandal Magna, Wakefield

St. Matthew’s and St. Luke’s Church, Darlington

One of my wonderful CMS Link Churches, St. Matthew’s and St. Luke’s Church in Brinkburn Road, Darlington, is now linked up with my home church in Heighington and has the same vicar, Lissa ~ so I was there last Sunday morning to share with them, and to thank everyone for their support…. Delighted to have my first experience of Cafe Church, it was wonderful. Such a blessing! The congregation sits around circular tables at the back of the church and the style is informal – but still very much a service.  Just before my talk in the sermon slot, there’s a … Continue reading St. Matthew’s and St. Luke’s Church, Darlington

Heighington, Co. Durham

What a wonderful village ~ and what wonderful memories! Heighington, Co. Durham is where I started teaching (Reception Class, aged 4-5) way back in 1985, and although I was there only 4 years, it was home ~ and a great place to be.  And it was from there that off I went to join CMS and so to Tanzania and Taiwan ~ so it’s my home church too…. Fast forward to last week, and there I was back in Heighington for a whole week, yippee! Staying with lovely friends, Anne and Nev, meeting up with new vicar Lissa, speaking in Heighington … Continue reading Heighington, Co. Durham

The Angel of the North

Off to Newcastle yesterday so I went, but in the middle of the early morning rush hour and heading straight into a traffic jam on the A1, there was the chance to turn off and visit the Angel of the North instead.  Right by the motorway.  And my first ever visit actually to it, rather than just driving by. Big big big, 10m high and almost as wide as a jumbo jet, and up on a hill…. Must admit, from a distance I don’t like the sculpture and never have, but y’know, from close up, and in the early morning sunshine, I … Continue reading The Angel of the North

Durham City – soooo beautiful!

A visit to the NE of England is never complete without a must-go visit to Durham and especially Durham Cathedral ~ and yesterday was the day!  The cathedral was looking great, even covered in scaffolding, and the views and reflections from the river were stunning. Even got to Evensong which was a treat! My good friends, Mike and his daughter Harriet, who came to visit Taiwan in the summer, also live in Durham.  Check out their visit to Taiwan here – what a great time we all had! And here they are last Saturday, all the family, along with Chen Yin-an, … Continue reading Durham City – soooo beautiful!

From SJU ~ UK: Welcoming David Li to England!

David Li (yep we have the same surname, just a different way to write it!) is one of our former students at St. John’s University, Taiwan, and he was also an active member of our Chaplaincy student fellowship group. He graduated only a year or so ago and now with his military service all over, he’s had the chance to come to the UK to study English for 6 months.  He’s landed in Stratford-upon-Avon, and guess what? Until yesterday I’d never even been there. Disgraceful, indeed.  Home of William Shakespeare and all that, so thought it was about time I … Continue reading From SJU ~ UK: Welcoming David Li to England!

Sharing about Taiwan @ CMS Trustees

CMS (Church Mission Society) ~ my favourite organization, and all my favourite people, of course! Met with the CMS Trustees (click on that link to find out who they all are!) and some of the CMS directors and staff on Thursday afternoon down near Oxford, and shared about life and ministry in Taiwan…. Do pray for them all, lots of challenges and things to do as a CMS Trustee ~ but as you can see above, lots of smiles and laughter too! Continue reading Sharing about Taiwan @ CMS Trustees

Burford, Oxfordshire Cotswolds

And voted by Forbes Magazine as the 6th best place to live in Europe! Ah, Burford, such a beautiful place, quaint country town, charming in every way!  And right in the Cotswolds too.  Had an hour to spend there on Thursday afternoon – and guess what? The parking’s free, the town’s small, the weather was good, and there’s lot to see.  There’s lots to buy too, but it’s not the cheapest place in the world, window shopping only! The church was preparing for a concert at the weekend, but is clearly a lively place, both past and present, with a long history … Continue reading Burford, Oxfordshire Cotswolds
